Re-cover: From Substance Dependence, is a course aimed at supporting people with substance dependencies on the road to recovery.

About the courseĀ 

Facilitated by Dr Zelda Strydom, Re-cover: From Substance Dependence is an expert-led course consisting of 10 weekly 1.5 hour sessions.

As a course participant you will be expected to commit to the full course, as each week builds on what you will learn in the previous session. You will need to commit to completing weekly homework tasks varying from one to two hours per week, and to practice the skills learning within the course as often as possible.

At the end of the course you will have a set of personal recovery goals established, and have a wide range of tools available to support you in achieving your goals. The techniques taught in this course will support you in your recovery toward living your best life, re-establishing health relationships, and reaching your full potential.

This course provides a space for people in various stages of their recovery journey to get together and explore their feelings, investigate their beliefs and build on their strengths.

The Re-cover: From Substance Dependence course covers the following key content areas.

The course will support you in understanding why you engage in certain behaviours, and provide you with an opportunity to develop a range of tools and resources to change your behaviour patterns.

As a participant you will then be able to develop a recovery relapse prevention plan using the skills you have learned to maintain your wellness into the future.

The Re-cover: From Substance Dependence course covers the following content:

  • Understanding the concept of recovery
  • Analysing the need for change
  • Setting goals in recovery
  • How the way we think can influence our behaviour
  • What to do with urges and cravings
  • Dealing with lapses and relapse
  • The importance of lifestyle balance
  • Building your relapse prevention plan

At the end you will be equipped with a better understanding of your own compulsive behaviour in response to the way you think, feel and act.

You will be able to set your own recovery goals based on your own values, and identifying your own strengths. Resources will be available to help you reach your goals.

You will be equipped with a wide range of skills and tools to use on your recovery journey in the future to maintain a sense of wellbeing in the future.

Alongside the sessions, the participant will be provided with a workbook that will include all the tools learned within each session, and homework to be completed after each session. This will support the participant in personalising the content to their own experience.
